Owner Hayden and Kylie Rau talk design process and what makes this home unique
Ever wondered what exceptional living looks like? Introducing our new show home in Wellington. With seamlessly blended space, functionality and style, every detail has been thoughtfully designed to create a home perfect for modern life. We sat down with Hayden, owner of Sentinel Homes Wellington, to hear about his design process and find out what makes this show home unique.
As you enter this two-storey home, you’re greeted by an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. Stand-out features include the hidden scullery, cosy gas fireplace and seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Upstairs, a spacious master bedroom awaits, featuring a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. There’s also a rumpus room, a well-appointed bathroom and two more bedrooms. But what makes this home really stand out? Hayden says it’s the design and finishings. Hayden shows that by building well instead of big, he can deliver a truly exceptional living experience.
“We chose quality over quantity – opting for a high spec 211 square meter house instead of a 300 square meter one. With stone benchtops, top-notch appliances, luxurious carpets, elegant glass balustrades, big windows and sliding doors, it’s a compact beauty.”
Without compromising on design, Hayden addressed privacy concerns in the ensuite and family bathroom with an elegant solution – skylights! By strategically placing eight skylights throughout the bedroom, master walk-in wardrobe, main bathroom, and ensuite, he’s let in beautiful natural light without compromising privacy. And the best part? Hayden says skylights are actually a cost-effective alternative to traditional windows.
“Skylights eliminate the need for windows on the walls. So, you get the best of both worlds – privacy and natural light without breaking the bank.”
The major selling points of this home are the two outdoor living spaces – one basking in the morning sun and the other bathed in the afternoon glow. The clever outdoor layout includes a spacious upstairs landing area designed to be a versatile sanctuary for kids or parents wanting downtime. Hayden says the option for trans-seasonal outdoor space instantly elevates the living experience without stretching the budget.
“We know how much our clients enjoy a useable outdoor space. For this show home, we placed the outdoor cooking area close to the kitchen for easy access and made sure the two spaces flowed for modern living.”
Hayden’s strategic use of space focuses on functionality and affordability. By removing the wasted space of hallways, you’re led into the heart of the living areas, with only one walkway to navigate. The upstairs layout is equally impressive, with the top of the staircase opening directly into the living room or main living area, from which all the other bedrooms and spaces flow. This design streamlines movement and creates an open, inviting ambience.
Although some clients may prefer traditional hallways, this modern and practical concept has received overwhelming appreciation from homeowners. Hayden says his aversion to hallways comes down to wasted space.
“We want to make every square meter count. And removing the hallway gives our clients a more open and modern living space. Our clients always give great feedback once they experience the open space design.”
Hayden’s keen eye for detail is evident throughout the home. Meticulous and deliberate with his design, he ensured the build was finished to his high standards.
The new Wellington show home is a testament to Sentinel Home’s craftsmanship and innovation.
