The 2024 House of the Year awards have been announced, and Sentinel Homes is proud to have been awarded with eight awards for our innovation, craftsmanship and commitment to creating outstanding homes for our customers across the country.
As New Zealand’s most prestigious building competition, the Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards celebrate the very best in residential building. Judges score each entrant based on workmanship, design, style, functionality and general consideration, and award the top entrants with a Gold, Silver or Bronze award.
Stuart Shutt, Managing Director of Sentinel Homes, is delighted that franchises throughout Aotearoa have been recognised in the most recent awards. “Doing well in the Master Builder House of the Year competition is incredibly important to us as it showcases the craftsmanship, quality, and dedication we put into every project.
Take a look at the winners from your region and hear what went into creating these award-winning homes.
Not only did this exceptional family home take out a gold award, it also took out regional category winner as the highest-scoring gold awardee in Taranaki. Judges praised the ultra-sleek style and clever architectural design, as well as the functionality and quality of the finished product.
Andrew Kuriger from Sentinel Homes Taranaki highlighted how working with their client to execute their unique vision was key to their success. “I love that the client made it her own. I love the feel of the spaces, it's a home with a very unique layout and I love that the home surprises you that way, and draws you in to explore it. And of course, we’re really proud of the consistently high level of build quality & attention to detail our team puts out.”
Sentinel Homes Auckland North and West franchise, led by owner Maree van de Water, was awarded gold for their stunning Gulf Harbour 319sqm build, along with a silver for their modern family home in Ōrewa. Both entries were commended for their vision, sophistication and functionality. As Maree puts it, “We maximise every square metre of the home and optimise function and form. Our homes feel good to be in - they flow well, they make sense and they leave a 'wow' impression.”
Maree and the team are delighted to have been awarded yet again for their work in 2024. “Everyone is invested in these homes so it is recognition of a job well done. Our awards get brought up all the time by clients, we often hear 'I saw all your awards so I knew you must build good homes!’.”
Nate Alley and his Waikato team took home gold for their exceptional future-focused build in Ōhaupō - with the judges commenting, ‘this is how to do light, airy and extremely stylish’. They also highlighted the cutting-edge architecture, thoughtful layout and carefully curated details that made this home stand out. As Nate puts it, “This home is so light! It's a lot of home that goes into the footprint, and it is a beautiful space to be in.”
Although not in it for the glory, Nate and the Waikato team are stoked to have taken home yet another House of the Year award. “While we don't do it to win awards, it's really cool for us to have our work reviewed by judges and recognised as being one of the best builders in the region. To have won 10 gold medals in a row now is something we're incredibly proud of. It really does demonstrate not only our commitment to doing a good job of building homes, but our overall goal of growing and being better in every aspect of what we do.”
Our Wellington franchise took home yet another gold award for the Sentinel Homes team, this one for their new show home. A generous two-storey build in Whitby. Led by owner Hayden Rau, the team delivered a spacious, modern home with stylish finishes. The judges specifically noted the strategic placement of windows and skylights to ensure a glorious amount of light throughout the day.
Hayden says that the team taking home a gold award is great acknowledgement of a job well done. “It’s recognition for my team who work very hard to make the end product as good as it can be. We really care about the quality of the finished home and enjoy taking visitors through the show home.”
Sentinel’s Auckland Central, South & East franchise was awarded a Silver for its exceptional delivery of a modern Maraetai family home on a very tight budget. This build proved that a well-designed and thoughtfully finished home doesn’t have to cost the earth. As franchise owner Barney Culloty puts it, “It was exceptional value for money. The quality was consistent with what we provide on all our builds and we did not go over the top just for the awards.”
This win adds to a growing list of accolades that the Auckland Central, South & East team has built up over the years. “We’ve been around for a long time and have received several awards. The team are genuinely proud. The longer we do this and the more of these we win, the more it proves we’re a safe pair of hands.”
Will Batts and his Counties team were also awarded a silver award for their high-quality show home in Karaka. The judges were impressed with how the team was able to deliver a luxurious home without blowing the budget, noting the considered design, slick street appeal and high-quality finishes.
Will puts the team’s continued success down to their integrity and attention to detail. “We do what we say we’re going to do – that goes for everyone from the clients to the suppliers to my team. Even with little stuff – especially the little stuff.” Check out the Karaka showhome for yourself - more details here.
